Best Spin Studios in DC

May 17, 2016 by The Sunny Side Up Recipes Leave a Comment

cycle

Over the past couple of years spin has become one of the most popular fitness crazes in the country, but don’t be deceived–it’s more than sitting on a stationary bike for 45 minutes. Here’s my input on some of the top spin studios in DC:

1. Soul Cycle: Soul Cycle is really the first major name to bring spinning into the limelight. While the classes are expensive (I usually go once a week or every other week, if that), I find that they have some of the most skilled instructors, the best music, and the best amenities of the other studios. With huge followings in New York and LA, Soul Cycle has expanded quickly in DC, and now has studios in the West End, Mount Vernon, Georgetown, and on U Street. Each class has a distinct playlist coordinated to your RPMs and set moves (sprints, climbs, push ups, crunches, etc.), and what really sets these classes apart is the instructors, who focus on motivation, and the aesthetic, which usually includes a dark room with candles and mirrors. However, as many instructors can jump into tough moves quickly that provide a lot of coordination (think pushups while sprinting on the bike), I would recommend it for more intermediate riders who have a sense of what their resistance and alignment should be without much additional instruction, or at least to be open to the fact that it might take a few classes to get the moves down compared to other spin classes that focus more on runs and sprints.

2. FlyWheel: Flywheel truly is Type A fitness paradise. Each bike is programmed with a small screen that calculates torque and distance as your ride, and during the class instructors will post everyone’s scores onto a large “TorqBoard” that posts your username and scores so that each rider is essentially “racing” against the pack. While I find that this makes me use more resistance than I would at other studios, it’s definitely a matter of personal preference and the comparison personally stresses me out more than motivates me. However, I do love that each rider can track metrics–including calories burned–after each workout and can also track their progress over time. Riders also receive a follow-up email indicating how they compare to the entire Flywheel population and to their demographic.  Like SoulCycle, FlyWheel’s Dupont location does provide beautiful bathrooms and changing areas complete with showers, water filters, and the works.  Try Gregg Pitts’ Saturday class (your first class is free!) and head to Glen’s Garden Market next door for a snack after class.

3. Zengo Cycle Logan Circle: Located in a basement at 14 and P, it can be a little difficult to find, but Zengo is a great studio that offers one of the cheapest spin classes in DC and is still competitive with competitors like Soul Cycle or FlyWheel. Zengo follows almost an identical model to Soul Cycle in terms of the structure of each class, although with slightly fewer amenities in the studio itself. Try a class with Patrick and after class, walk down 14th to Press juice bar (located in between R & Corcoran streets) for a post-workout drink.

Still need to step it up?  For a challenge, try U Street’s new Sweatbox class–think high intensity interval training (HIIT) with bikes and heavier weights and cardio segments. Review coming soon!

Homemade Granola

April 6, 2016 by The Sunny Side Up Recipes Leave a Comment

IMG_7323

This granola is a staple in my kitchen. Homemade granola is so easy to make that you won’t want to turn back to buying it in the grocery store–not to mention that making it from scratch is so much more affordable! I love to make mine with lots of nuts and seeds to add texture, with coconut to keep things sweet. I keep a stash at home and a small jar in my desk at work so that I can add it to a big bowl of greek yogurt and berries for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Enjoy!

Easter Entertaining

March 24, 2016 by The Sunny Side Up Recipes Leave a Comment

PEONIES

Easter is one of my favorite days of the year! Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite entertaining tips to make the day extra colorful:

Sweet: I love the idea of using this recipe from Barefoot Contessa–the most heavenly coconut cupcakes with cream cheese frosting–and topping them with little candy eggs.

Savory: I’m also loving this feature from The Everygirl on building the perfect cheese board, including everything you need to know about cheese types, presentation, and pairings.

Eat: Since I’m half Greek, I grew up trying a lot of different recipes for Greek Easter. My absolute favorites are this recipe for traditional Greek bread and this recipe for rack of lamb lamb and slow-roasted potatoes. We let it cook all afternoon with some oregano, olive oil, and lemon and it’s one of my favorite meals all year long.

Decorate: The simplest (and most budget friendly) centerpiece:

P.S. Have extra peeps left over and don’t know what to do with them?  I’m not a big fan of them, but these peeps s’mores are pretty adorable.

Green Matcha Latte

March 22, 2016 by The Sunny Side Up Recipes Leave a Comment

3 22 03

I gave up coffee for Lent (one week left!) and since then have been drinking green tea almost nonstop. To mix it up a little, I started making these matcha green tea lattes, which I usually order at Starbucks for a treat but often find them to be too sweet. I decided to try making my own recipe at home and I love them so much that I think I might just stick with them instead of coffee from now on even after Lent is over.

Matcha lattes still have that same warm, comforting feel of a cup of coffee or a regular latte and offer a slight caffeine boost to increase focus and energy. Better yet, matcha is packed with antioxidants. amino acids, and chlorophyll, which is where it gets its light green color. Unlike traditional green tea, matcha preparation involves covering the tea plants with shade cloths before they’re harvested to increase chlorophyll production, at which point the matcha tea leaves are ground into a fine powder  (“matcha” literally means powdered tea). As a result, the powder is much more potent than drinking tea water and its nutrients can be more readily processed by the body. I make mine in the morning with almond milk and a touch of honey and it’s a wonderful way to start the day!

IF: Table

February 23, 2016 by The Sunny Side Up Recipes Leave a Comment

if table

Hello friends, I am so thrilled to share this post with you today!! For those of you who are regular followers and saw my Valentine’s Day Entertaining post, I had an incredible French-themed Valentine’s Day dinner with about ten girlfriends here in DC to celebrate friendship and sisterhood. There was so much laughter, beautiful food, (and of course, chocolate!), and it was one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time. Most importantly, what I really loved is that our table was filled with truly women who shared a love of Jesus and a desire to be His hands and feet in our community in a pilot of something called the IF: Table.

For those of you who haven’t heard of the IF: Gathering before, it’s an amazing movement of Christian woman all of the country seeking to answer one critical question: “If God is real, then how do we live our lives?” Their ultimate vision is to gather, equip, and unleash women to live out their calling.

Enter: IF: Table,  the “gathering” piece. The goal? Bring together a group of 6 (or more) women who meet on the second Sunday of every month to share a simple potluck meal and dive deep with other women over real stories and Christ centered conversations. The amazing IF team provides conversation cards–and even recipes!–every month and leaves the cooking and discussion to us! Some of this month’s questions that really stuck with our group:

  • How can we, as women, do a better job of  breaking down barriers that separate us and building each other up?
  • How can we do a better job loving one another and our community, our co-workers, our neighborhood – so that the world would know us as disciples?

I am so excited for next month’s meeting, where we’ll be gathering for an amazing Italian dinner! We’ll be adding a justice component each month as well where we discuss a pressing issue in our local or global community and what steps we can take to serve, from sex trafficking to homelessness and beyond.

No matter how skilled of a cook you are (and I’ve got you covered on recipes!), I can’t say enough how powerful this simple idea is. As women, we all come from  different places, different stories, different struggles, but we all bring something to the table in God’s Kingdom. God wants to use your story and there’s nothing more beautiful than sharing life with another sister as we seek to serve Him together through all seasons of life. Never underestimate the power that one small group can have to change the world.

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts…” (Acts 2:46)

Kahlua Espresso Chocolate Chip Cookies

February 8, 2016 by The Sunny Side Up Recipes Leave a Comment

flour

Pretty much anyone who went to school can confirm that whenever finals week struck, these cookies would appear. Not only are they some of the best chocolate chip cookies you’ll ever have (think warm, gooey, melt-in-your-mouth chocolatey goodness), but the espresso and kahlua are my secret ingredients to make it extra special. I decided to bring them out again when the East Coast was struck with a blizzard a few weeks back, and was happy to see that they’re still a crowd favorite.

While preparing your cookie dough, stir together one tablespoon of espresso powder and three tablesppons kahlua into a thick, aromatic syrup. Gently fold into your batter and voila! These aren’t your everyday cookies.

  1. Jessica Sepel:

Oh, how I love this site! Jessica is one of my favorite nutritionists–I love that her recipes are so simple but have incredible flavor, with lots of fresh herbs and spices (check out her cookbook here). She also has superb posts on redefining our relationships with food/emotional eating, mindfulness, and a series of short 2 week restart-plans that I’ve enjoyed. Did I mention that she also has a beautiful Instagram account with killer travel photos?

  2. Ambitious Kitchen:

If you have a killer sweet tooth like me, Monique is your girl. I love her healthy remakes of some of my favorite recipes, like her guilt-free Flourless Chocolate Chip Chickpea Blondies (trust me, they’re even better than the original).

  3. Madeline Shaw:

Madeline is adorable. I love her video tutorials that make recipes I wouldn’t usually try, like zoodles (“zuchinni noodles”) look so easy. Who knew using a spiralizer was so simple? Throw in some pesto and I’m in.

  4. Nutrition Stripped:

Her green smoothie will change your life. A delicious, easy way to get in all my greens

  5. Oh She Glows:

Angela Liddon is one of the top vegan chefs out there. Her cookbook is really phenomenal if you want to experiment with adding more greens to your diet, even if you consider yourself a total carnivore.

  6. My New Roots:

Also plant-based, this blog has one of my favorite recipes that I make when I want to mix things up (or confession: impress someone), Moroccan carrot ribbons and black lentils.  The beautiful vegan tacos that I made a while back also came from this site.

  7. The Everygirl:

This is actually a lifestyle blog, but they have beautiful healthy recipes as well as great tips on entertaining and the professional realm. I love their salads and breakfast ideas!

  8. Half Baked Harvest:

Some of the most beautiful food photography I’ve ever come across, hands down.

  9. Love and Lemons:

Their airy, colorful photos and designs make me want to try everything! Check out their most recent post, Sunshine Citrus Chia Bowls.

The Joy of Simplicity

January 2, 2016 by The Sunny Side Up Recipes Leave a Comment

Do you ever set a list of ambitious New Year’s Resolutions on January 1, only to see them totally fall apart by the end of the first week of a year?

Here’s a tip for this year: give yourself permission not to.

It’s such a great thing to set aside time to focus on goal setting and long-term planning, whether we want to get healthier, lose weight, or just make life a little simpler. But rather than setting the bar far too high–and setting us up for guilt and stress down the road–give yourself permission to be gentler with yourself this year.

First, let’s take a step back. What direction are you going in? What direction have you been going in this past year? Does your life right now make room for fun, joy, stillness, rest, exploration and adventure–things that will make life richer? And to what extent are they based on the things that you feel others expect of you, rather than the things that are most life giving to you? Are you finding time for stillness, for calm, and for creativity? Are you creating or consuming? Are you taking enough time to practice gratitude, intentionality, and simplicity in your every day life and your relationships?

Now comes a (little) goal making. What are some small goals you can set in your relationships, financially, professionally, or in regards to health and fitness, that you can actually measure (and better yet, reward yourself for), and that will help you to get there?  For example, rather than starting with big ticket items like running a marathon, how about setting an intention to join a running group and building relationships with a great group of running buddies, or signing up for a fun, themed 5k race just to get back to the sheer enjoyment of running that made you start in the first place?

At the end of next year, keep in mind that who we are becoming and how we grow in love and service to others is far more important that what we accomplish.

Setting goals is great–but perhaps this year, simplicity is even better. Give yourself permission to live simply, focusing more on your character than your to-do list. 2017 will thank you. And, a bonus…you might just get some of those big ticket items crossed off your list with even greater success than you could have envisioned to begin with.

Looking for an easy last minute app for your Christmas or New Year’s Eve parties?

I love deviled eggs, but wanted to make a lighter version that uses Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise. I also used this mustard that my boyfriend brought us for Christmas–it’s so delicious! Enjoy, and Merry Christmas to you and your families!  🙂

Total time

Serves: 12
Ingredients
  • 1 dozen eggs
  • ¼ cup light mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt
  • 3 tbs. fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 2 tbs. fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tbs. mustard
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tbs. paprika (for garnish)
Instructions
  1. Cut eggs in half lengthwise. Remove yolks from one dozen eggs, setting aside in a small bowl, and place whites onto a serving platter.
  2. Combine egg yolks and all other ingredients in a food processor until smooth.
  3. Scoop yolk mixture into a piping bag fitted with a star tip and pipe mixture into hollows. Garnish with dill, parsley, and/or paprika. Serve immediately or let chill.
  4. For perfect hard boiled eggs: Add one dozen eggs to boiling water and reduce to a low simmer. Let sit for 10 minutes and transfer eggs to ice water bath. Let sit for 5 more minutes until cool, peeling shell off of eggs. Ideally, try to peel eggs while still slightly warm and the shell should come off easily.
